The Shape of College

By Alexandra Hines

The dreaded freshman fifteen is something that everyone hears about before heading off to college and becoming immersed in new dinning options on and off campus. But there may be a way to avoid it.

Students at Virginia Commonwealth University are lucky to have readily available facilities that not only provide a place to work out, but a place to eat healthy foods as well.

VCU Student Kathlynn Stone says that she stays in shape, “by going to the gym and watching what she eats.”

Stone, along with friend Katie Bruner, explain that their favorite workout class is Body Sculpting.

“We jog, do lunges, work on abs, and lift weights,” Stone said, describing Body Sculpting as a full body workout.

In addition to going to work out classes at the Seigal Center, Bruner participates in on-campus running club.

“My friend (Michael Levesque) that I run with, came up with the idea, and we thought it would be good to use running to raise funds for charity,” Bruner said.

Levesque, president of the running club, has plans to train with other members of the club for a marathon in November of 2010.

Levesque described how he would like to see the club grow.

“I’d like to see it bring together a community of VCU runners, allowing members to find runners of equal ability to run with and run races that will impact the VCU community through charity work,” Levesque said.

Many students at VCU work hard to stay in shape through a variety of activities offered by the school. Although the freshman fifteen can be a reality for some, other college students are on the attack, finding ways to stay healthy and active!
