Perly’s: A Place to Come and Stay

Words and Photos by Shannon Minor

Wandering around Richmond one evening, I stumbled across Perly’s, unknown to many and tucked away on E. Grace and 1stSt.   Through the windows, the restaurant was dark, but the street lights casted light upon the shelves of dishes, glasses, and knick-knacks behind the counter.  I was curious as to what this place would be like during the day, as it looked so cozy and homey.  I knew I had to go back and try the food.

My experience at Perly’s did nothing but satisfy my curiosity.  Everything on Perly’s menu is under $10, and for your money you get a lot of food.  The food is heavy, but in the best way because of how filling it is for the price.  If you’re looking for a hearty breakfast that will fill you up for the day at a low price, Perly’s is worth the trip.

Busy and loud, the people surrounding me appeared like regulars, however, instead of feeling unwelcomed, I felt invited to become a regular too.  A waiter sat my friend and I swiftly and promptly returned with complimentary water.  I ordered from the list of “Good Morning Specials”: the Number 5.  It consisted of a salmon patty, bagel, two eggs, and home fried potatoes.  I did have a number of options to choose from, ranging from grits to fresh stewed apples.  The special also includes a choice of tea or coffee.  Although I found the salmon a bit too salty, the rest of the meal balanced out the flavors.   The potatoes reminded me of when my mom would cook fried potatoes for dinner.  The food seemed to fit perfectly together and form a delicious, filling meal that left me feeling content.

My friend ordered a Mushroom Swiss burger, whom he says was “just average”. The cream soda that accompanied his meal stood out as the best part.  The right balance of ice to soda ratio made the temperature of the beverage just right that the soda was cold, sweet, and refreshing.

What I found most impressing was the included cup of tea.  At first I received Lipton black tea, but I asked our waitress if there were any other types.  She returned with a basket, filled with various types and brands of delicious teas.  The tea was served with a container of honey and a lemon wedge, followed by a tiny tea pot of hot water.  Not only was the tea delicious with honey and lemon, but also it enhanced the environment and made my friend and I comfortable to stay for a long time without being rushed.

Captivated by its casualness, price point, and fairly quick service, I rate Perly’s four out of five Shafer birds.  Whether grabbing a quick breakfast or lunch, you will definitely not leave with an empty wallet or empty stomach.

Pearly’s is open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday, and on weekends, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 pm. It is about a 10-15 minute walk from campus.
