Pizza Hut Express

There aren’t too many tricks to the trade here. It’s Pizza Hut, condensed. Great if you want to just pick something up really quickly since everything is ready-made for you. Plus it is kind of hard to pass up with the smell of pizza hitting your nostrils as you walk through the Commons. As long as you aren’t expecting anything gourmet, you should be satisfied with your choice here.

OPTIONS
Pan pizzas, buffalo wings, breadsticks and breakfast biscuits in the morning. Fountain drinks and fruit with every meal-swipe option.

WHERE
VCU Student Commons

HOURS
Monday-Friday: 7:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.
Saturday: closed
Sunday: 5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

IF YOU HAVE A DINING PLAN
The swipe menu is a bit complex. It serves breakfast, but be aware that you must spend Dining Dollars between its two swipe times.

Meal-swipe times:

7:30am – 10:30am
Biscuits with your choice of egg and cheese; bacon, egg and cheese; or sausage, egg and cheese with an order of hash browns, a fruit, and a drink.

2pm – Close
Personal Pan Pizza: Pepperoni, Cheese, Veggie with a fruit and a drink.
Six wings with a fruit and a drink.

BUSY TIMES
Lunch and dinner rushes

QUALITY
While pizza at Market 810 To-Go specializes in pizzas you can share with varying quality, you can reliably count on Pizza Hut to give you something delicious. Plus, the wings aren’t too bad, either.

RECOMMENDED OPTION
Pepperoni is always a classic choice, but grab the Hawaiian Luau if you’re feeling saucy. If you’re a fan of cheese pizza, try sprinkling some parmesan on that. I guarantee you’ll enjoy it.

If you have early classes and want something quick to bite on your way to Temple or Harris, I recommend stopping by here since your food is already ready to go. Just grab it, swipe it, and be on your way!

TIPS
If you’re a Pizza Hut fan, check out their breakfast menu. Also, keep in mind that during the week Pizza Hut is open late compared to the other eateries in the Commons.

Don’t be afraid to double swipe or use dining dollars with your meal in order to get a cheaper pizza and wings combo.

Einstein Bros. Bagels

Einstein brings something light and simple to campus. It is exactly what it sounds like: a place that offers a quick bite to eat. And a pretty damn good bagel for a college student, with a pretty well-valued price.
It isn’t going to try and be anything else, and that’s what there is to appreciate about it.

OPTIONS
Bagels, with a various amount of flavored cream cheese or sandwich style, along with a soda or hot cup of coffee. Wraps, salads, parfaits, and fruit are available as well.

LOCATION
810 Cathedral Place. Next to Hibbs, facing the Cabell Library.
Right next to Market 810 To-Go.

HOURS
Monday-Thursday: 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Friday: 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Not open on weekends

FOR THOSE WITH A DINING PLAN
Only dining dollars until 5 p.m., then it opens up for swipes. Nobody really knows why they would wait until dinner to allow students to use their swipes here.
For a swipe, students receive one drink, one bag of chips or a fruit, one yogurt, and, of course, their personally customized bagel.

BUSY TIMES
This one’s a bit of an anomaly. It is the busiest in the mornings, even after the installation of the new IHOP and their varied swipe menu. It also gets a bit of a line at 5 p.m. when its swipes open up, but other than that, if you’re in the mood for a bagel, you won’t have to worry about lines.

QUALITY
You can never go wrong with something so simple. It’s still a better bagel than you can make at home, and has much more variety.

RECOMMENDED OPTIONS
The Chicken Salad or Ham and Cheese bagel with an apple and a cup of coffee will treat you right. There’s nothing wrong with trying out a new bagel type, either. Asiago bagels tend to be pretty popular, especially because you can choose a spread like honey almond to go along with it.

TIPS
The main drawback is waiting in line, particularly in the morning, yet it’s the time that makes the most sense. If you need to grab something on the way to class though, this is probably one of your better options if you can’t pass through the Commons Convenience.

Also, if you don’t like a lot of spread, the workers will take care of you as long as you ask.

Raising Cane’s, IHOP and Croutons: One Tough Call

Words and Photos by Michael Pasco

On October 24th, 2011, VCU introduced a new dining facility labeled the Laurel and Grace Place (which is something I doubt any student would actually say) right by most of the freshman dorms.

Weeks before they were ready, I knew I wanted to try all of the establishments over the course of the opening day. I was most excited for Raising Cane’s because I have heard nothing but good things about it from my buddies at ODU, but as far as hype goes, IHOP comes in first. Croutons, Salads, and Wraps was more of something that people appreciated being there as opposed to the excitement of the other two.

Bleecker’s St Cafe: Just Under the Students’ Noses
